Easter Sunday

Happy Easter!  It was a beautiful day here - up to 77 degrees!  We attended our church's service last night to avoid the holiday rush, so this morning we went for a walk through the park.  Instead of hunting for eggs, we hunted for geocaches!

We came home and dyed some eggs.  It was an outside event because of how nice it was.  Then we gobbled them right up for lunch!

Emma, version 5.5

Emma is 5 1/2 years old today!  I told her I needed a picture of her since it was the 20th.  In her first year, I got a picture of her on the 20th of every month to show her growth, but she's not growing quite that fast anymore!  She looks very surprised here...

(Yes, she is intentionally wearing a t-shirt backwards!)

She does ask regularly how tall she is, so we measure her on this paper chart when she asks.  She is now 46" tall!

One little monkey jumping on the bed

Who knew jumping on the bed could be such a hair-raising experience?!

If I were a zoo animal...

The theme this week at school is "zoo."  Naturally, if Emma were a zoo animal, she would choose to be a cheetah!

My, what big ears you have!

Mythbusters

Emma discovered the show Mythbusters on Netflix one day, and has since watched several episodes.  They really do the coolest experiments!  When I saw that OMSI was having a Mythbusters exhibit, I knew we'd have to check it out.

I planned for us to go on $2 Sunday.  Sweet price!  Only... what I didn't realize is that the Mythbusters exhibit requires a separate fee.  Doh!  Oh well, we decided to go since we were already there.

The first thing we came across was the "Flatus Containment" device.  Yes, there was even a chair that you could sit in and try your luck at passing gas.  No thanks!  They handed out smartphones to carry through the exhibit, and you checked off each experiment that you attempted.  On this one, I just said we weren't able to achieve the results :)

After looking around, I could see why they charge a separate fee.  They had brought in many props from the actual experiments and presumably their warehouse.  The books had many copies of notes for various experiments!

Blind driving.  Emma steered without being able to see where she was going, while Ed directed her from the other screen!

They had four machines just to test how often a piece of buttered toast will land butter side up/down!  That was a fun one.

How long can you hang from your fingertips on a ledge?

Can you react faster than a speeding bullet?  We also watched a live show where someone got to try and dodge a paintball!

Then we visited some more of the museum.  Since it was cheap admission day it was very crowded, but one must-see is Emma's favorite - the ball room!  We may have stayed in this room for half an hour while Emma hooked up hoses and collected dozens of the little balls to shoot around the room!

The final stop was working the crane in the brickyard!

You may notice that Emma has a bandage on her chin in these photos.  Well... on Thursday afternoon, she took a spill off her bike after coming down a rainy driveway and turning too fast.  She had a very bloody chin and was very upset of course.  I took her helmet and coat off and looked at her chin - pretty certain at that moment that she'd need stitches.  It was right before dinner so I called Ed to let him know we were headed to urgent care.

She ended up getting six stitches in her chin that night.  She was very brave and is happy to tell you so too!!  When we got home and Ed looked at her helmet, he realized that it was actually the strap of her bike helmet that cut into her, not the ground.  That explained why it was a very clean cut across her chin.  I'm trying to figure out if there's something that might help to cover the strap in the future.  I don't know, we'll see.  She won't be able to put a helmet on for a couple of weeks yet anyway.

Then, last night she got the stitches out.  It was healing very nicely so they had to soak it before they could get the stitches out.  She was uncomfortable but it wasn't nearly as painful as it had been five days earlier.  She's happy to be on the mend!  The steri-strips are hopefully going to stay on for 7-10 days, but they do come off easy.  She knows she can't be running around with other kids, and just needs to avoid full contact for now.  Here's how it looks now!
